  There is something about this moment and the quivering stillness of a post-pandemic, pre-revolutionary world well suited to drones. They alone are rife with the quandaries of our time: eternal, but reborn each moment; motionless, but ever-changing. Play a drone loudly and it envelops the room, penetrating the space with its omnivorous weight. Play it quietly and it inhabits that room, becoming the space itself. Either way, the listener's discreet position in the world is the final element of the work, the last essential contribution to the piece's ultimate shape.
  
  So it only seems fitting that The Academy should emerge now. Longtime western MA sonic gurus Bill Nace and Matt Krefting have been playing in the same orbit for so long that their collaboration has begun to create a kind of event horizon. Where Nace's guitar gestures begin and Krefting's tape concoctions end is anyone's guess. This is a dense but deeply brittle music, tingling with the tension of a moment in perfect balance. It is not played so much as coaxed into being. But gentle: push up, and it will evaporate, pull down and it plunges into the ocean. Recorded in 2017 but aptly arriving at last.
