A little about Wes and this record from our friend Josh Burkett:

We first heard Wes Buckley over here in the early 00s...and wow...he blew our minds! picture a combination of early JACKSON BROWNE(great songwriting) DANIZIG(singular style) and yes...TIM BUCKLEY(amazing voice...& no relation btw)...he was doing a live set here at Mystery Train Records in Amherst.. with some great WHITEHAUS characters.. (the great ARKM FOAM and others i think...) It’s not often you hear someone combine great influences in unique ways while moving forward at the same time.. and he was doing that so well. Like SUN RA he can be such a shining positive light beam in what seems like a BLACK HOLE WASTELAND that is thee (GWAR-like) USA/ America zone these days...Since that show there have been lots of new WES recordings.. plus the unearthing of great early WES solo stuff too( some of which came out as a MYSTRA cd) .. and now here we are... a WHOLE lp of new WES material.. 'THE TOWERING GROUND'! Which brings us into a totally new WES dimension...new sounds and songs that push EVEN FURTHER into a great new future...and makes us now think of WES as kind of a one man GRATEFUL DEAD...as he leads us on more deep voyages into all thee great/different dimensions.. and we are glad to have his light on these journies...as many days lately feel like a endless MERZBOW lp. So yes...'THE TOWERING GROUND' brings us to a new and better place altogether...dealing with all sorts of different subjects while his guitar playing is as great as ever btw...combining the vibrations of players like DJANGO REINHARDT, HANK WILLIAMS, and BOBB TRIMBLE.. among others...while always keeping things very singularly WES BUCKLEY...what a strangely/long trip it's been already...

Stunningly gorgeous soft rock, bringing to mind some kind of homogenization of the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, and the Bee Gees. The music is a textured backdrop for the lush, poignant vocals. And while I called it soft rock, the slide guitars give it a hint of country, and tho the music is mellow the vibe is so melancholic as to almost be considered edgy. Lute FP
